Picture a maintenance technician standing beside an unfamiliar machine. Production has stopped, the operating manual is buried somewhere on the company network, and the most experienced technician is unavailable. A small QR code beside the control panel opens the precise diagnostic steps for that model. Within moments, the technician is working through the problem—without searching a portal, calling a supervisor, or sitting through a course.
That simple interaction captures how QR codes have evolved from an overlooked technology into a powerful tool for performance support. But delivering information is only half the story. QR codes are hardly new. Developed in the 1990s to track automotive components, they spent years searching for a compelling role outside industrial applications.
